Description
The ileoanal anastomosis is a surgical procedure that connects the ileum to the anus, allowing for bowel function after the colon has been removed. This project, done in collaboration with Nicole Arizala, who illustrated Figures 2 and 3, presents illustrative sequences designed to provide a clear and accurate instructional resource to aid surgeons in understanding and mastering this technique.
Preproduction
The preproduction phase began with observing the surgical procedure and writing notes about the main components of the process. Post surgery, the surgeon was consulted and the main steps of the procedure was identified.
Extensive research followed to identify and label the structures in the sketch, using anatomy references for accuracy. The labels and sketches were then reviewed by anatomists, and their feedback was incorporated to refine the work.
An initial illustration was created based on the identified steps of the procedure. These illustrations were then refined during the second surgical viewing, ensuring alignment with the actual process. The updated illustrations were further reviewed and consolidated with the procedure being performed and subsequently screened by the surgeon for accuracy and clarity.
Production
The final illustration and accompanying text were produced using digital inking techniques, with particular attention to line weight. The images were cropped and refined to highlight key areas of focus.
